Alot of people will ask me, “What is an engagement session like, and what can I expect?” It has SO much to do with a couple’s personality! I won’t “force” introverted people to be crazy silly, and it won’t make sense for couples who like to joke around with each other, to take too many “serious” photos. Most of the couples I’ve worked with are up for anything and it’s usually a great mix of both! They just want to have fun and document this time in their lives (and sometimes use images for “save-the-dates”).
I think of it as a great way to hang out, get to know each other and for them to get used to having their photo taken! People “snap” photos all the time, when they are out with friends, at a party, a family get-together. This is completely different. It’s letting your guard down, being yourselves, and getting used to your photographer. Looking to pinterest for inspiration is fine, but don’t expect to “be” that couple in the photo you love. That is their moment, and typically doesn’t make sense to copy it…..if you like something you see, make your own version! I am open to ideas as long as they are authentic to you. I am pretty good at “reading” a couple when I meet them, so I just take it from there! It also helps to prepare a little beforehand, with questionnaires and knowing a couple’s taste.
This is Bethany & Bryant. They got together with me last september when the mosquitoes were still out in full force. We still had an awesome time and I can easily say I feel like I made 2 new friends. I just recently saw them at a wedding I was shooting and had no idea they’d be there. I was so happy to see them!
Guys, if you are hesitant about this type of shoot, I can probably get some references for you from the other grooms I’ve worked with. Most will tell you it was NOT what they expected (which is usually a tortuous hour of girlyness). We all have fun, laugh, and it’s a chance to be out and about, see charleston and get photos out of it!
Check out this ridiculously cute couple. Can’t wait ’till the wedding!
