Christen & Brian {Charleston Engagement} ….and details on shooting engagements

Christen and Brian are SO funny – especially together! I knew this going into the shoot and I was pretty excited about it. Little did I know JUST how funny they were until I got there. We joked and laughed almost immediately. Brian had proposed to Christen at the battery, so I proceeded  to “narrate” a scenario of them meeting there for the first time. They totally got it and went along with my silliness. It made for alot of laughs and made the shoot so much fun.

I think one thing that is so important as a photographer is to get to KNOW who you are working with. Questionnaires are the best! This has been a process for me since I started shooting. The more I know, the better I feel going into a shoot. For engagement sessions, it’s a collaboration. I try really hard to help couples feel comfortable, but the tone that’s set is also up to who I’m shooting and their personalities. Sometimes it can be serious, silly, awkward, relaxed. Any of these things are OKAY! It isn’t the end of the world if someone has a hard time loosening up in front of the camera. I am probably one of the most awkward people when a camera is pointed at me! This actually helps me understand how it feels to be photographed, and I do my best to make it fun.

When I first started shooting, I’ll be honest and say I thought engagement sessions were a little weird. I didn’t get it. I was afraid of the cheese factor and that was the last thing I wanted to give people. I realized quickly though there are so many great reasons to do them. Think about the last time you had your photo taken over and over for an hour or more. Um, probably NEVER. So, this helps couples so much for their wedding day!

Brides and Grooms, you will feel much more comfortable with your photographer when the wedding day comes, and usually much more relaxed in front of the camera. Photographers, you will know how your couple interacts and what works best for them. Everyone is different. This is not a one-size-fits-all kind of shoot. Find out what your couple likes, what they do for fun, what locations suit them most, and envision this for them.

Christen and Brian, thank you both SO SO much for making me laugh so hard! I can’t wait to see you guys for your wedding!
